Caring for Patients with Down Syndrome: Tips and Strategies for Creating an Inclusive Healthcare Environment
Learners will hear patient and family perspectives about their experiences within the healthcare system. Although experiences can be diverse and unique, the personal examples shared are designed to help learners gain a more personal understanding of life with Down syndrome and the ways in which the healthcare system can better support the individual and their family.
Learning Objectives:
Identify helpful communication techniques for working with individuals with Down syndrome and their families in a healthcare setting
Describe challenges individuals with Down syndrome and their families face when communicating with health care providers
Recognize various dynamics in creating a successful patient-centered care plan for an individual with Down syndrome
Program Format:
60-90 minutes
Speakers: a self-advocate with Down syndrome and their parents/caregivers
A DSAW representative will also be in attendance to help moderate.
Learners should come prepared to engage speakers in a question-and-answer style discussion.
