At this special session of Young Leaders Academy, we will be taking a field trip to visit medical students at the Medical College of Wisconsin! We'll be talking about how to advocate for ourselves at the doctor's office and learning about our self-directive voices. This will be a great opportunity for participants to learn more about the medical field and for MCW students to gain experience interacting with people who have varying abilities.
Self advocates and parents are both strongly encouraged to attend.
Schedule:
The first hour will include dinner and small group discussion. The self advocates will get a chance to act as the physician!
WHO: Transition-aged students with any developmental disability that want to work in a community-based setting. This class is recommended for ages 16+. If you think your child under 16 would benefit, please contact DSAW at info@dsaw.org!
WHEN: February 27, 2020 from 6pm - 8pm
Attendance at every session is not required! Feel free to come when you’re able. We welcome self-advocates to join our class at any time.
WHERE: the second floor of the Medical Education Building at MCW
COST: $25 per class. Please contact DSAW to discuss payment options, including cash, check, credit, IRIS, Family Care, and DSAW Grant.
DSAW charges fees for some recurring programming because of the cost of curriculum, staffing, occupancy, etc. However, participant’s ability to pay should not prohibit attendance! Please contact DSAW if you need financial assistance.
We take pride in offering a fully accessible, inclusive environment for everyone! We will have sensory-friendly supports available to those who need them. If your child needs one on one support, please contact us at info@dsaw.org.
