Join us on November 9 for a conference on Sexuality and Safety! The conference will begin with a session on Health Sexuality and Abuse Prevention as presented by Terri Couwenhoven MS, CSE. This session will discuss sexual learning patterns that increase vulnerability, the unique “how-to’s” of teaching sex ed. for this population, as well as identify topics for empowering healthy sexuality in individuals with I/DD at home, school and in the community. Our second session will be about Sexual Abuse Prevention and Intervention. Pam Malin, who is a Disability Consultant will identify safety concerns, help families understand how to reduce risk, identify signs and symptoms of abuse as well as identify the process and resources when abuse occurs. This is a conference that you will NOT want to miss!

Session One: Healthy Sexuality & Abuse Prevention

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Terri Couwenhoven, MS, CSE is a Certified Sex Educator who specializes in designing and implementing sexuality programs and materials for people with intellectual disabilities, families and professionals. Her puberty workshops help families learn together in a comfortable, safe, and fun environment. Concrete teaching methods (videos, slides, pictures, games, activities) are used to improve comprehension and help parents become more comfortable and confident helping their children understand body changes, self care, and appropriate social behavior. Pam Malin has worked at the intersection of disability and abuse for over 35 years. She is a presenter at the local, statewide and national level on the topic of Sexual Assault and People with Disabilities, Healthy Relationships, Boundaries and Multi-Disciplinary Response to Victims of Abuse with Disabilities. She currently works for Disability Rights Wisconsin in the Victim Advocacy Program, where she is the Victim Advocacy Specialist for the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Grant. She was appointed to the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities for the last 9 years and also consults with individuals and agencies to teach boundaries and safety through her own business, CARES LLC.
