Puberty Workshops for Pre-Adolescent Females with Intellectual Disabilities

This 2-part workshop is for pre-adolescent females (usually 9 or 10 to 14 or 15 aged girls who are just beginning, in the midst of, or close to finishing puberty) with intellectual disabilities and their parent(s). Following this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Distinguish between public and private places and body parts.

  •  Identify physical and emotional changes that happen to females during puberty

  • Identify hygiene products used by adults and why they important

  • Manage menstruation

  • Identify social and safety rules related to the body and private body parts

  • Saturday, February 10th   9:30 – 11:30 AM     

  •  Saturday, February 17th   9:30 – 11:30 AM     

  • Time: 9:30 – 11:30 AM     

Location:  Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin (11709 W. Cleveland Ave. West Allis, WI 53227)

Fee: $45.00 (includes both sessions 2/10 and 2/17)

The cost of this workshop includes light refreshments and all handout materials. Register once to attend both dates.

About the Presenter

Terri Couwenhoven MS, CSE is a sex educator and author who specializes in designing and implementing sexuality programs and materials for people with intellectual disabilities, families and professionals. Her puberty workshops help families learn together in a comfortable, safe, and fun environment. Concrete teaching methods (videos, slides, pictures, games, activities) are used to improve comprehension and help parents become more comfortable and confident helping their children understand body changes, self- care, and appropriate social behavior.
