Living Well: Safe & Free Class Series
DSAW is offering a NEW free program with curriculum from Living Well! This class will focus on independent living and the skills needed for individuals to reach their personal goals!
The Living Well Project’s Safe and Free classes are designed to help youth and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) learn about important topics and skills for self-advocacy and independent living.
WHEN: Every Tuesday from 5-6 PM
*October 19th will be the first session. The course runs for 20 weeks.
WHERE: This is a virtual class. This class will be facilitated using Zoom technology.
TIME: 5-6 PM
COST: Free class offering
Requirements for DSAW Virtual Programs:
Courses are geared for ages 12 and up, although there is no minimum age. If you think your loved one would benefit from our classes, sign them up! If you are unsure if your loved one is ready, contact Lilly to see if DSAW Connects is right for you.
Able to use Zoom and interact with peers over webcam appropriately
1:1 in-home support IS available based on DSAW staffing. Click here if you are interested in signing up for in-home support.
Course Dates:
Session 1: Knowing Yourself - Participants will talk about their likes and dislikes and figure out their personal strengths
Session 2: Being Part of Your Community - Participants will talk about why being part of the community is important, identify one new thing they would like to try to do and practice acting self-confident and believing in themselves
Session 3: Problem Solving - Participants will talk about problem solving skills and how to know their feelings
Session 4: Rights - Participants will talk about rights and choose rights that are important to them. They will also talk about the steps to take if their rights are restricted or violated.
Session 5: Voting - Participants will talk about who can vote, how to vote, and how to overcome barriers to voting
Session 6: Communication - Participants will talk about ways to be a good communicator, how to be assertive by using “I” messages, and the three types of communication: passive, aggressive and assertive
Session 7: Safety at Home - Participants will talk about how to use “No Go and Tell,” how to keep their home a safe place and how to be safe on the internet
Session 8: Safety in the Community - Participants will talk about how and when to use 911, safe and unsafe places and people, and how to keep personal items safe in the community
Session 9: Abuse Awareness - Participants will talk about what abuse is, ways to protect themselves from abuse and how to report abuse
Session 10: Relationships Part 1 - Participants will talk about relationship rules and responsibilities, the different types of relationships and healthy vs unhealthy relationships
Session 11: Relationships Part 2 - Participants will talk about boundaries (what they are and why they are important) and consent (what it is and why it is important)
Session 12: Review and Wrap Up - Participants will talk about what they learned over the series and set goals for using their new skills

This series is co-facilitated by a self-advocate leader and a DSAW staff member. DSAW has hired Joe Newman as the self-advocate facilitator! Joe has been an awesome participant in many of DSAW’s virtual programs as well as an important member of the DSAW community. We know he will be very successful as a co-facilitator of this program.
