Creating Inclusion Through Adaptive Technology
In June, DSAW held a webinar centered around creating successful inclusion through adaptive technology and modifications. Christi Kasa, Ph.D. hosted the webinar; Dr. Kasa is an Associate Professor for the Department of Teaching and Learning and the Director of the Office of Inclusive Services in the College of Education at the University of Colorado. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate classes focused on adaptive instruction and inclusivity schooling for children with disabilities.
In her years teaching, Dr. Kasa has found immense value in visual learning—A number of students absorb knowledge better when they can actually see what is happening. This type of learning can be implemented across all subjects through adaptive technology. For one, Kasa believes students with disabilities should be immersed among their peers rather than separated. Allowing those with disabilities to work together with other students can be beneficial for all parties involved. From there, the individuals can receive any needed technology or other modifications to best aid their learning. During the webinar, Dr. Kasa recommended different forms of adaptive technology, such as applications and online book readers that she has found beneficial through her time working with her students.
Applications:
There are many iPad or other tablet apps that involves this idea of visual learning. Below are some apps that Dr. Kasa has seen work effectively with students:
1. Snap Type
With Snap Type, students can take pictures of documents through the app scanner and then be able to add text or other notes from their device. According to the app store, Snap Type was designed for kids and adults who struggle with their penmanship. The app provides an opportunity for students to better organize their thoughts.
2. Wet Dry Try
The Wet Dry Try app allows students the ability to practice handwriting formations on a device. A tool that sets this program apart from other similar apps is the inclusion of a verbal handwriting coach. This ‘coach’ provides positive reinforcement and instant feedback on penmanship errors. The coach emphasizes the start, sequence, and directionality of all numbers and uppercase and lowercase letters. It is a great example of visual learning as students can see the correct way to form their writing and then try it on their own.
With Clicker Sentences, students are given a variety of words and are tasked to use all of them to create a simple sentence. Per the website: “Clicker Sentences will enable [students] to produce work they can be proud of while learning the key skills necessary for independent writing.”
4. Voice Dream
Voice Dream is a text-to-speech application for students to express what they are thinking and feeling. Hearing words simultaneously while reading them is said to increase understanding and knowledge preservation. Text-to-speech programs, in general, are effective pieces of adaptive technology for individuals with disabilities to express their emotions.
Dr. Kasa uses a variety of other applications in her classroom. Below is a list of her other recommendations:
Clicker Connect https://www.cricksoft.com/us/clicker/ipad/clicker-connect
Manipulatives http://www.brainingcamp.com/product/mobile.html
Prizmo https://creaceed.com/prizmo
Online Book Readers:
Dr. Kasa additionally recommends a variety of book-related adaptive technologies. She believes that technology can be such a powerful aid for those learning to read. Read on below for some adaptive technologies that Dr. Kasa has found beneficial for many of her students:
High Noon Books is a website specifically intended for students who are reading below the reading level for their grade. This program gives recommendations of books at each grade level for all interests and subjects. In each book, there is large emphasis on the most common words of the English language to increase exposure and chances of retaining their meaning.
Special Reads is a high-interest reading program for children and teens with developmental disabilities, such as Down syndrome. With this program, educators can purchase reading bundles that all include a variety of high-interest books, flash cards, textbooks, guides, and specific instructions for teaching. Per the website: “Our high interest books are designed to engage readers from first glance and move them quickly to success.”
Tar Heel Reader allows students to read other users’ easy-to-read book, as well as craft their own book! When doing so, users can use pictures from the websites’ online database, or they can upload their own to aid their storytelling.
With technology constantly evolving, there are more opportunities than ever for adaptive and inclusive innovations to be implemented in society. Dr. Kasa’s recommendations provide only a glimpse of the possibilities that a student with disabilities can utilize to help learn and retain information. Thank you Dr. Kasa for these wonderful recommendations!

Meet a DSAW Leader: Morgan
Hello DSAW friends and family, my name is Morgan Brzank and I am a board member for DSAW-COTH-La Crosse. I currently reside in La Crosse near UW-La Crosse but I am originally from New Berlin, WI (near Milwaukee). I am about to go into my senior year of college, studying with a major in Business Management and a minor in Healthcare Analytics with an emphasis in Human Resources (a mouthful, I know!).
I always say my path with DSAW is not only unique but one of my biggest blessings, and proves you never know what will open up doors and opportunities in your life. In high school, I was on my school’s dance team and one of our coaches asked me to help coach our communities Special Needs and Abilities Poms (SNAP) team. I fell in love with coaching these girls immediately and I also met my friend, Alexis Malloy while coaching that team. Here, her family asked me to become a supporter for Alexis where I got to help Alexis with things like work, respite, healthy habits, tutoring and so on. This experience also opened up the opportunity to learn about DSAW and I began volunteering there throughout high school (I still work for her remotely). Through Alexis, I met Dawn Nuoffer and the fabulous Abby.
Through all these opening doors, I made my way to becoming a board member for the La Crosse chapter when moving to La Crosse for college. I am now the Secretary for our board and I love helping out with the volunteers in our area, having a part in the DSAW walk, and getting involved with the Self-Advocates when I can. Last summer, I had the blessing of working at DSAW Headquarters as an intern – best summer ever! I even work for DSAW Family Services from time to time. DSAW and all the individuals with Down syndrome have changed my life and I am so honored to continue my work in this community. As I finish up my last year in college and look forward to new directions, I am excited to continue being a DSAW member for La Crosse and being involved in DSAW overall!

Meet a DSAW Leader: Intern Edition
Meet DSAW’s hard working Summer 2019 Interns! We couldn’t do the work we do without these amazing and passionate individuals. Read below to learn more about Ava, Brett, Lindsey, Mariah, and Michelle!
Ava Landmeyer, Social Work/Programming Intern:
My name is Ava Landmeyer and I am so excited to be interning with DSAW this summer! About 8 months ago, I began volunteering at DSAW’s Tween Nights after hearing about DSAW through the Breathe Respite Program a couple years back. I’ve always felt a pull towards working with individuals with special needs, and I’ve been lucky enough to learn just how much I love this type of work through a few different opportunities, such as working as an assistant Irish dance teacher, Best Buddies club, Breathe Respite, and now DSAW! It’s been such an amazing experience getting to know everyone at DSAW and getting more involved in some of their amazing programs. Besides working with DSAW and similar organizations, I also spend my time Irish dancing and working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. I am so looking forward to the opportunity to work with DSAW and all of its fantastic members.
Brett Braza, Marketing & Communications Intern:
Hello! My name is Brett Braza and I am the Marketing & Communications Intern here at DSAW. Although I have only been working here for a year, I can say with confidence that this incredible organization has changed my life. I have been lucky enough to meet so many inspiring self-advocates, many of whom I would call my heroes. These self-advocates have proven that just because an individual has a disability does not mean they are limited in life—they are capable to do anything! I plan on bringing that perspective to school and throughout the rest of my life. Speaking of school, I just finished my freshman year at the University of Minnesota! I absolutely love the Twin Cities area and will be excited to be back up there again in August. I am studying Marketing and Non-Profit Management through the Carlson School of Management, two fields of study greatly inspired by my work with DSAW! In my free time, I enjoy running, traveling Up North, and watching movies, specifically Pixar and Marvel movies! I am trying to improve my cooking skills this summer as I will be living in an apartment next year in the Twin Cities. But, that is a work in progress! I am so excited to be at DSAW for the summer!
Lindsey Clark, Social Work/Programming Intern:
Hi! My name is Lindsey Clark and I am a Social Work/Programming intern at DSAW in West Allis. I am currently a senior at Marquette University studying Social Welfare and Justice and Gender and Sexuality Studies. I am originally from Detroit but have loved living in Milwaukee these past three years. After I graduate, I plan on pursuing my Masters in Social Work and hope to work to support individuals and impact my community. I wanted to be involved with DSAW, not only to gain experience working with the programming of a non-profit, but also to join the strong community that advocates for the dignity of all individuals. Although I am only in my first month of interning here, I have quickly grown to love the people and mission of DSAW. In my time as a DSAW intern, I can't wait to learn, grow and become a part of this amazing community.
Mariah Ganyo, Social Work/Programming Intern:
Hello! My name is Mariah Ganyo and I am apart of the programs internship at DSAW for the summer. I just graduated this spring from The University of Wisconsin- Stout with a bachelors of science degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a concentration in social work. I grew up in a suburb outside of the twin cities in MN and my next door neighbor who is one of my best friends is a person with Down syndrome. Him and many of his friends helped me find my passion for helping others. In my free time, i enjoy being outside, reading a book, out shopping with friends and family, or inside trying to cook a delicious recipe off of Pinterest. I am so happy to be apart of DSAW and can’t wait to get to know all of you!
Michelle Dieckelman, Nonprofit Management & Event Planning Intern:
Hi! My name is Michelle Dieckelman and I am the Nonprofit Management and Event Planning Intern for DSAW. I am a junior at UW-Madison, double majoring in communicative science & disorders and communication science & rhetorical studies. My career aspiration is to be a speech pathologist in the NICU. I am from a family of 5 – my parents, a brother, and a sister. At UW – Madison, I am involved with the Special Olympics of Wisconsin, Moment of Magic, and Badgers Give Back. All of these experiences have brought me down the path of working at DSAW. I participate in flag football and volleyball with the Special Olympics of Wisconsin and it has brought me so much joy and great friendships. With my Moment of Magic organization, I get to dress up as a female superhero and help children to feel “brave, strong, and fearless.” DSAW is a great organization and I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to work as an intern for the summer. I can already see the impact this organization has on the community and I cannot wait to be part of this amazing organization and team.

Hello! My name is Garrett Lancelle and I am a DSAW-Central Wisconsin Board Member. I am also a proud husband and father to three wonderful children (JJ (1), Isabelle (4), and Gavin (6). I am also a sibling to Max, Katie, and Joe and son to Paul and Nancy. I have worked as a special education teacher for the last 9 years throughout Central Wisconsin (Edgar, D.C. Everest, and Wausau School District). My family and I reside in Weston, Wisconsin.
My journey to DSAW stemmed from being a part of a family who lived by the motto of "putting the FUN in DYSFUNCTIONAL". More than that I lived in a family of love.
My siblings, Max and Katie, have Down Syndrome. My parents were amazing advocates. My brother Joe and I can attest that we are the people we are today due to being the siblings of Max and Katie. Max and Katie helped us to understand how to conquer fears, fight through adversity, and fight through the most difficult of task that life presents.
My experiences as a sibling, son, and special educator have led me to being a part of DSAW. I have seen the impact our community has on families and look forward to our growth in the future!

AngelSense - Using Technology to Keep Families Safe
This post was written by an AngelSense Staff Contributor.
When a child wanders, it is a life-threatening event. Wandering is most often associated with children with autism, but many children and adults with Down syndrome are also prone to this unpredictable behavior. Keeping our loved ones who wander safe is an around the clock challenge, as some have difficulty understanding safety issues and communicating with others.
The good news is that AngelSense GPS has created a solution for parents and caregivers. It includes a GPS device with voice capabilities, advanced data analytics, and a Smartphone app used by caregivers and first responders, all designed specifically for individuals with special needs.
AngelSense GPS does more than offer reassurance to families and freedom to those who use it. Proven to prevent the hazards of wandering, it actually saves lives.
What sets AngelSense apart from other GPS systems is that it has 4 crucial, life-saving elements.
Proactive Alerts - AngelSense automatically detects deviations from the norm, such as an unexpected arrival to an unknown place or a late departure. It creates a daily timeline logging every location visited and provides detailed routes.
Non-stop Monitoring - The device is always tracking, even when the Guardian phone app is closed.
On All Day - Sensory friendly wearables help to secure the device, making it removable only with a magnetic key held by the parent or caregiver. The device itself is on all day as well, to be powered off only through the Guardian phone app.
Quick Response Tools - A rich set of tools through the application such as live 10-second updates and map location, auto- pickup 2-way voice features, an alarm and a first responder alert all make a potential search quick and effective.
By using AngelSense, parents are able to diffuse wandering incidents before they escalate to a potentially dangerous event. AngelSense has no range limitation and tracking is possible from anywhere using a Smartphone. Sometimes, it’s simply the peace of mind that you have, knowing exactly where your loved one is, whenever during the day, wherever you are.
"We went camping over the weekend and did you know, I knew exactly where he was at the campground?!!!! I saw him at the lake, the pool, ice cream stand, and playground!!!" Tracy Daly, Executive Director, Down Syndrome Association of the Hudson Valley.
With the innovative technology that is available to families with AngelSense, help is always right around the corner.

Meet a DSAW Leader: Roxy
My name is Roxy Pryes and I am one of the board members for DSAW-Green Bay. My husband, Craig and I live in Casco with our two children, Ollie and Tori. I attended my first DSAW Awareness Walk back in 2012 when Ollie was just under 3 months old. I was in awe of all of the wonderful people I met that day. Our next DSAW sponsored event was a monthly play date where the other moms went crazy over Ollie. (Now that Ollie is a little older I get to be one of the moms going crazy over the new babies).
Over the course of the next few years my family attended play dates, parents nights out, and of course more walks. I knew from early on that I wanted to volunteer with DSAW but I was not able to right away due to balancing work and raising two young children. In 2017 I was able to help the rest of our newly forming board plan the Awareness Walk. Since then I have loved the brainstorming, planning, sleepless nights, and friendship that has come along with being part of the DSAW-Green Bay Board. In my free time (what is that?) I enjoy spending time with my family, camping in the summer, and reading (can't remember the last time this didn't involve a book with more pictures than words). I also enjoy my second job (first one is being mom to Ollie and Tori) working at a local clinic as a patient service representative. I absolutely love planning new events for DSAW Green Bay.
The Benefits of Equine Therapy
This post was written by Rachel Fischer of DSAW partner REINS, Inc.
Equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) encompass a wide range of vital programs servicing individuals with physical, psychological, emotional, behavioral, and social needs. At the core of all EAAT services lie the healing power of the horse. The therapeutic nature of horses has been recognized for centuries, dating back to early Grecian culture with the first documented research noted in the 18th-19th centuries (DePauw, 1986).
Key programming options within the realm of EAAT include: therapeutic riding, hippotherapy, interactive vaulting, therapeutic driving, and equine assisted learning. Therapeutic riding places recreational education of horsemanship skills at the forefront; thus, programs teach key riding skills with educational modifications to accommodate rider disabilities. Hippotherapy is the provision of occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech therapy services using the horse as the therapeutic medium. Interactive vaulting offers therapeutic benefits through gymnastics-like activities on horseback. Therapeutic driving offers participants educational opportunities through carriage driving, allowing participation for those who may not be appropriate for mounted activities. Finally, equine assisted learning services utilize an experiential learning approach to promote the development of critical life skills including trust, leadership, assertiveness, communication, self-confidence and self-awareness (PATH Intl, 2019). All EAAT programs are recognized through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International, a regulatory agency offering program guidance, regulatory guidelines, and supportive advocacy. Services are provided by PATH certified instructors or therapists.
Despite the wide array of optional programming, EAAT participants can experience extensive physical, cognitive, and socioemotional benefits. EAAT exists within an enjoyable and motivating environment, allowing certified instructors to target skills that may be otherwise challenging to address through traditional intervention.
Physical: Equine assisted activities offer a wide array of physical benefits including improved balance, coordination, strength, endurance, core strength, head control, gross motor skills, and fine motor skills. Horse anatomy (particularly pelvic girdle and lower extremity) mirrors human anatomy, a feature unique to horses and unable to be replicated in any other therapeutic environment (DePauw, 1986). Because of this comparison and compatibility, horses naturally offer three-dimensional movement, which allows PATH certified professionals to simulate and mimic natural human gait and movement while a rider is mounted (DePauw, 1986). This natural three-dimensional movement also challenges and alters the rider’s center of gravity which leads to activation and eventual strengthening/improvement in vital balance reactions (Zadnikar & Kastrin, 2011). Horseback riding inherently requires a high degree of core strength, head control and gross motor skills to maintain the appropriate position while astride (Champagne & Dugas, 2010). EAAT can also assist with tone management. Smooth, well controlled movement and the body heat from the horse can assist with high tone neutralization while shorter, more impulsive strides offer increased proprioceptive and vestibular input to improve hypotonia. Riders must also utilize fine motor skills and upper extremity coordination to direct and control their mount, offering opportunities to target improvement in these areas as well (Scott, 2005).
Cognitive: EAAT participants can additionally see a variety of cognitive benefits including improved attention, sequencing, memory, communication, spatial awareness, left/right discrimination, and safety awareness. Programs are often offered in group settings, thus allowing instructors to target communication and attention within the context of selected group activities (Scott, 2005). Participants must use clear cues to direct each specific equine therapist, thus improved communication is often noted through this intervention (DePauw, 1986). Specific horsemanship activities create improved spatial awareness and sequencing skills through enjoyable and motivating tasks (DePauw, 1986). Given the unique nature of this therapeutic intervention, participants must learn specific techniques and skills to safely navigate in the arena with noted carryover into everyday activities.
Socioemotional Benefits: EAAT participants experience a variety of social and emotional benefits as well, including, but certainly not limited to, improved social motivation, improved self-regulation, improved management of sensory behaviors, improved self-control, increased confidence, trust, leadership, and assertiveness. By the very nature of this therapeutic environment, EAAT offers a diverse sensory experience for all participants; this allows for decreased sensory sensitivities and improvements in sensory seeking behaviors (Holm et al, 2014). The equine therapists act as a vital team member and are highly intuitive to human behavior; horses invite self-reflection and review while offering participants a new way to see their internal landscape. Additionally, successful participation in EAAT and direct interaction with these powerful creatures directly results in improved self-confidence and assertiveness.
Equine assisted activities and therapies undoubtedly provide a strong foundation in horsemanship skills while also offering a wide array of physical, cognitive, social and emotional benefits. The power of the horse transcends disability, age, and skill to provide a motivating and enjoyable experience for all involved. All potential participants are encouraged to visit the PATH International Website (pathintl.org) to locate a program near their hometown.
ABOUT REINS: REINS, Incorporated is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, based in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, committed to improving the lives of those with disabilities through individually structured classes using therapeutic interactions with horses. We are an equine assisted activities and therapy center accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International.
We offer summer programs with weekly classes as well as single session classes spring through fall. The program has excitedly experienced significant growth in the past three years, with over 100 expected participants registered for the 2019 season. We strive to provide support and growth opportunities for all our participants.
REINS offers three equine assisted activities: therapeutic riding, equine assisted learning and combined equine assisted learning/therapeutic riding. Therapeutic riding places emphasis on education of horsemanship skills with consideration of underlying disabilities. Equine assisted learning is a ground based, experiential learning approach designed to teach critical life skills including trust, leadership, assertiveness, self-awareness, self-confidence, communication and respect. The combined equine assisted learning/therapeutic riding program combines the same focus on life skill attainment through small group learning experiences with an additional focus on horsemanship skills.
Our mission: "REINS, Inc. provides personal growth, challenge and development through equine assisted activities and therapies to improve participants quality of life."
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Rachel Fischer is blessed to be the Senior Instructor and Equine Professional at REINS Incorporated, Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies. She is a licensed occupational therapist and PATH certified instructor, dedicated to providing high quality, participant-centered, evidence based and compassionate services to ensure participants achieve their desired goals. She has a special interest in pediatric populations, although has worked with individuals of all ages both personally and professionally.

Meet a DSAW Leader: Ryan
My name is Ryan Mattson. I am a fresh member of the DSAW Central Wisconsin Board and this is my AMA… oop, sorry wrong website, this is my Meet a DSAW Leader. My wife and I live in the Wausau area along with my step daughter Halena. On July 2, 2016 my wife and I had our first baby together, her name is Emma. I knew immediately that she had Down syndrome and upon questioning the nurse and Doctor, we were met with a refusal to acknowledge. Like many, we had some difficult times over the weeks to follow between being passed around to Pediatricians, trying to learning about this new world we’d stumbled into, waiting for official test results (they said I’m sorry), and wondering if Emma had any health issues. That said, Emma came away clear of the initial major health issues and is a joy and a wonder.
The DSAW Central WI Chapter was just being formed when Emma came along and we’re grateful to have been able to meet so many others with similar experiences in the local area. My wife and I have both recently transitioned from full-time corporate world jobs to each running our own businesses. This has allotted us some extra personal time to spend with the kids, attend events, and now also put some time into this chapter of DSAW.
In my personal life, I am constantly on the go and my list of projects seems to grow faster than it gets shorter. I like physical labor and I dabble in all trade skills, sometimes more out of necessity than enjoyment. When I have some spare time I like to read, play video games, collect memorable toys from my youth, and fiddle with photography. As a family we spend a lot of time outside, often bicycling/walking/running, eating ice cream (I’m working on obtaining my Briq’s 100lb club membership), and of course Emma also keeps us on the go.
